“To All Appearances”, Herbert Blau

To All Appearances Cover

“Before you even look at the stage, everything in the material reality of theater practice is ideological: not only the price of a ticket, but the conditions of the gathering, the attitudes of the ushers, the advertising or want of it in the playbill, program notes or their absence…air conditioning in the theater, the size of the candy bar, the distance from the stage, and when you look, the thickness of the makeup or its absence, whether or not you can see the actor’s sweat and whether or not they want you to see the sweat; the fact of a division from the stage, audience here, actors there…the weight of the platforms…the use and exposure of lights and the weird phenomenon of the curtain…” (pp. 49-50)

What’s all this?

I've created this site to document and share research and activities related to my Masters of Arts program. It's partially a blog, partially a journal, partially whatever you want it to be. Feel free to have a good look around at what I'm reading, seeing, writing and thinking about. I'd love to see/hear your comments.
